Beyond the single rail: The case for intelligent interoperability in cross-border payments

Cross-border payments are evolving rapidly. Customers increasingly expect international transactions to offer the speed, transparency and simplicity they experience domestically, while providers must operate across a growing number of payment rails, currencies, markets and regulatory environments.

New research from The Payments Association highlights the scale of that challenge. Among payments professionals surveyed, 43% identified advances in payment technology as one of the biggest factors shaping their cross-border strategy over the next three years. Connecting to local payment rails, regulatory compliance, and FX management were each cited by 31% as major operational challenges.

Beyond the single rail: The case for intelligent interoperability in cross-border payments explores why adding more connections does not necessarily create better payments. Instead, it considers how providers can orchestrate multiple networks more effectively – using capabilities including intelligent routing, pre-validation and multi-rail orchestration to improve payment outcomes while managing operational complexity.

Produced by The Payments Association in collaboration with Dandelion Payments, the white paper combines original research with perspectives from payments leaders at Standard Chartered, Xoom, Yape and Euronet’s Cross-Border Payments Segment.
