Together, we can make a Difference

Agentic Commerce

The Agentic Commerce Working Group aims to follow developments in agentic commerce and contribute to making agentic payments safe, trusted and workable in the UK.

Why should I join a working group?

The Payments Association’s working groups comprise industry experts from across the payments chain, who share the mission of driving industry change to shape the future payments landscape and improve the industry on behalf of members of the association.

Being a member of one of The Payments Association’s working groups comes with a host of benefits:

  • You will get exclusive access to meetings with industry experts.
  • The opportunity to build your network with the leading figures from across the payments industry.
  • Invitations to exclusive events from The Payments Association, such as the Working Group AGM at the annual PAY360 conference.
  • The opportunity to actively help deliver the working group outputs.

In addition, committee members will receive:

  • An invitation to an annual in-person meeting.
  • The opportunity to feature your headshot and company logo on selected outputs and our website.
  • The opportunity to contribute and network in our monthly meetings.

All working group members are representatives of organisations with The Payments Association membership.

Our mission

“The Agentic Commerce Working Group is a practical, practitioner-led forum for working out what happens to payments when AI agents start to shop, pay and transact on behalf of people and businesses.

Agents are moving from recommending to acting. That raises questions the industry hasn’t yet answered: how an agent proves it has authority to pay, who is liable when something goes wrong, how fraud, disputes and consumer protection should work, and what needs to change across cards, account-to-account payments and wallets.

We’d welcome members who are building, testing or thinking about agentic payments to take part. If you’re a regulator, policymaker or organisation working on these questions, we’d be glad to hear from you, whether for a conversation, a consultation or to share your perspective with the group.”

Outputs

Agentic commerce is online shopping in which an AI agent acts on a consumer’s behalf rather than alongside them. The agent does not just suggest, it transacts.

UK merchants believe AI agents are already buying on their sites. Most are preparing. One barrier rises above the rest: regulation on agentic commerce remains formative rather than settled. No binding framework yet exists for AI-agent payments, liability or authentication.
