This Green Paper examines the potential for Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs) and proposes a journey towards their widespread adoption. It is for stakeholders across the financial ecosystem including banks, PSPs, regulators, government and central banks in the UK and around the world.
The paper builds the case for retail CBDCs and considers the obstacles currently preventing their adoption. It concludes by advocating for extensive collaboration to bridge the gap between today’s payments landscape and a future landscape where a retail CBDC is benefiting everyone who pays and gets paid.
“The widespread adoption of CBDCs could be as important to the 21st century as the end of the gold standard was to the 20th. Because of the UK’s long-standing position at the forefront of global financial services, we have an opportunity to take a leading role in shaping the future of money.”
Tony Craddock, Director General of The Payments Association
The authors of the Green Paper, including Paul Sisnett, CEO of paywith.glass, and Kunal Jhanji, Partner at Boston Consulting Group, will be featuring in The Payments Association’s Insights webinar “Mastering the New Era of Digital Money” using CBDCs” on 17th February 2022.
