SUMMARY:Consultation engagement session: RPIB consultation on the design of the future retail payments infrastructure
DESCRIPTION:Event overview\n\n\nDate: Tuesday 11th August 2026\n\n\nTime: 11:00 – 12:00\n\n\nLocation: Online (Zoom — joining details will be shared with registered attendees)\n\n\n\nThis consultation from the Bank of England seeks to gather views on the design of the UK’s next-generation retail payments infrastructure. It sets out initial thinking on how a core clearing and messaging infrastructure could support a wide range of payment journeys\, and invites views on priorities\, trade-offs and key design choices. It is intended to inform the work of the Bank and the Retail Payments Infrastructure Board (RPIB) in developing a high-level design for the core infrastructure and its role within the wider payments ecosystem.\n\nThe RPIB has a key role in translating the public policy objectives of the National Payments Vision (NPV) and Payments Vision Delivery Committee (PVDC) into a design for the next-generation infrastructure.\n\nThis consultation will inform the RPIB’s work on the development of a high‑level design for the core infrastructure to be taken forward by an industry-owned and led Delivery Company (DeliveryCo). It approaches the overarching question of what the core infrastructure must achieve from three complementary perspectives:\n\n\n\nFuture payment journeys: What payment journeys should the core infrastructure support\, i.e. what will ‘next-generation infrastructure’ deliver for end users?\n\n\nDesign principles: What principles and characteristics should guide the design of core infrastructure?\n\n\nThe wider payments ecosystem: What role should the core infrastructure play within the wider UK payments ecosystem?\n\n\n\nThe RPIB will consider responses to this consultation to refine its thinking\, and identify areas where further analysis\, testing or industry engagement is needed\, including through the new engagement forums.\n\nThis consultation closes on 11th September 2026.\n\nWhy attend\n\nThis 60-minute online session for members of The Payments Association will provide a collaborative space to share views\, test ideas\, and contribute directly to the drafting of our formal response to the consultation.\n\nThis is a practical\, discussion-led workshop designed to gather real member insight rather than presentations or briefings. We would appreciate as many members attending as possible to ensure our response is comprehensive and representative of the views of our membership.
